“Around Boudhanath there are many poor people sleeping in the street. They are very cold. Each morning I like to give them hot thugkpa [soup]. I would like to rent near Boudhanath a room, a kitchen, and give them thugkpa. This is something very practical because there are lots of poor people sleeping there. This I would like to do. I am praying for this, praying that my wish one day comes true.”

The distribution of hot meals to some of the poorest people, living on the streets of Kathmandu, began in July 2023.
Thanks to the financial contribution of our friends and long-time supporters at Mani Bhadra, meal preparation started in a small restaurant on the outskirts of Kathmandu: local volunteers distribute around 80 meals a day, three times a week, to people living on the streets in different areas of the city.
For these people living in desperate conditions, receiving a hot meal means not only survival, but also the hope and knowledge that they are cared about and supported.
Nepal remains one of the poorest countries in the world, a situation greatly exacerbated by natural disasters: the 2015 earthquake, when thousands of families lost their homes and livelihoods and then the Covid 2020-2022 pandemic with the subsequent economic and energy crisis. The sharp rise in the price of basic necessities in Nepal, and the loss of jobs, have brought many families already living on the edge of survival to their knees.
