LONG DISTANCE\nADOPTIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n

For the school\nyear 2018-2019, approximately 365 sponsors offered financial support to school\nchildren in Nepal. The children accepted into this project are from families\nwho are not able to support their education. Most of the parents are factory\nworkers, weavers, beggars, cleaners or labourers working long hours on building\nsites or road construction. After paying room rent and buying daily\nnecessities, these families have no spare money to pay school fees. These\nchildren would not be able to attend school without the help of a sponsor. Many\nof the families experience incredible difficulties – some have incurred debts\nto be able to enrol their children in school and they go forward making daily\nsacrifices in the hope that their child will eventually find a sponsor. To stay\nin school and have a chance of a better future these children rely upon the\ngenerosity of others. School reports, letters and photos have been regularly\ncollected and sent to sponsors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The long distance\nadoptions project has also supported young monks, a number of elderly persons\nand disabled children. Thanks to the kindness of their sponsors a further 81\nstudents are presently studying in Further Education.<\/p>\n\n\n

STATIONARY DISTRIBUTION<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since\nsome years we have been distributing stationary in a number of village schools.\nThis is always a happy and highly anticipated event for the children, their\nparents, teachers and volunteers alike. In these villages the source of income\nis almost exclusively from farming – this means there is little money for\nbuying \u2018luxury\u2019 items such as stationary for school. To encourage families to\nsend their children to school and to offer the children the advantage of having\npens, pencils, notebooks and other stationary supplies for their study we are\nextremely dedicated to continuing and extending this project. The younger\nchildren were very excited this year to receive coloured pencils!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This\nyear we gifted stationary to children from Mahendra Rastrya Adharbhoot School,\nGhan Jyoti Adharbhat School and Shree Bagh Bhairab Secondary School.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once again benefitting from our\nStationary Distribution programme were also the 26 children living in the\nJorpati Orphanage, the 14 children living in the small group home of Hope Foundation\nand the 55 young monks of Sed Gyued Monastery. This year we were also able to\nprovide stationary to the young monks of Serpom School in South India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Office stationary supplies and board\ngames were also supplied to each structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

School Sponsorship<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are very happy to finance once\nagain the annual running costs of the Shree Jana Bhuwana Primary School in\nShikharpur Village for the academic year 2018-19. The school needs funds for\npaying teachers, general running costs, books, stationary and so on in order to\nguarantee the education of 70 pupils from local villages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GANGCHEN SAMLING SCHOOL<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

New School Building<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The students of Gangchen Samling School started their\nacademic year (from April 2018) in a new school building. The old building was\nno longer able to house the growing number of students and was in need of\nrepair so a larger nearby property was modified in order to create a new school.\nThe new building provides an extra 12 classrooms, a bigger outdoor play area,\nincluding a stage for performances, there is also a kitchen, music room,\nscience lab, computer room and numerous bathroom facilities! This will allow\nthe school to increase the number of students to around 650. There will also be\nenough space to start vocational training classes in the future, most probably\nfor electricians and plumbers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An opening and blessing ceremony was carried out by\nLama Gangchen during his visit and as usual the children enthusiastically\noffered a cultural performance of song and dance for all the visitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The school is attracting an increasing number of\npupils due to the high quality of the education and the good reputation it has\nin the local area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year 22 students from the school sat the\nSecondary Education Exam and they all obtained very high grades with one\nstudent receiving a very hard to obtain distinction! All these students will be\ngoing on to further education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The youngest children are educated using the\nMontessori method, and in all classes close attention is given not only to the\nquality of the teaching but also to the personal development of each child.\nMany families living in the area near the school, in the outskirts of\nKathmandu, where income is very low, are asking for their children to be\nadmitted – also in the hope that their child will find a sponsor!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Funds have also been made available this year to\ninstall solar panels at the school. This means the school will be independent\nof the unstable electricity supply of Kathmandu but above all the school is\nhappy to have a clean-green source of energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Music and dance<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the academic year 2018\/19 the School will continue\nto make available music and dance classes for any child, of whatever age,\nwishing to participate. The classes take place before the school day begins.\nThe children are really enthusiastic about the classes and put a lot of effort\ninto preparing performances. It is wonderful to see the pure enjoyment they get\n– moments of fun and creativity. A space in the new school building has been\ndedicated as a music room.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Further\nEducation<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every year the number of students staying in further\neducation is growing. This academic year we are supporting 81 students who are\nstudying in college (classes 11 and 12) and university. Most of them have\nchosen to study subjects that are most likely to help them to find work: hotel\nmanagement, business studies, accounting, teaching and social work are all very\npopular. We are very proud of what these students accomplish for example Deepa\nKarki, who we have supported since she started school, received her degree this\nyear and has now found employment working in the offices of a national\nnewspaper!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

HEALTHCARE<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Medicine<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We were able to help the small health\npost in Mawakanpur District by providing a supply of much needed medicine. This\nhealth post is responsible for the primary health care needs of about 8,000\npeople. During the rainy season these people are often completely cut off from\nother medical services. The help of the Association in providing medical\nsupplies to this health post is essential to them as they serve the local\ncommunity. This year we provided: antibiotics, pain relief medication,\nantiseptic, cough medicine, vitamins\u2026 We would like to thank our friends from\nSerpom Monastery who transported and delivered the medicine to the health post,\nin the presence of local council officials, during a programme organised by\nthem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

EMERGENCY<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Distribution\nof Blankets<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In March the Association was able to\ndistribute 700 quilted winter blankets to 2 villages: Th\u00f6se\nand Gaushala in the Mahottai District. Blankets, produced by Gangchen\nDrupkhang, were given to elderly, sick and disabled people and to those\nfamilies living in the worst conditions. The people in this part of the Terai\nRegion earn a living from farming sugar cane and are extremely poor and in need\nof even the most basic necessities. We are very grateful to our friend and\nsupporter Thonla Sonam who undertook the long and uncomfortable journey to\nensure the help was delivered to those most in need. The conditions in these\nvillages are some of the worst we have seen so we are happy to have brought at\nleast a little comfort to these people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Emergency\nFund<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are very grateful for the\ncontributions to our Emergency Fund, that allow us to immediately help elderly,\ndisabled and sick people! The money is used to make sure very vulnerable people\nhave a safe place to sleep, food to eat and medical care if they need it. We\nhave many requests to the Emergency Fund from people who are experiencing\nextreme difficulties with day to day survival or who have specific needs such\nas an operation or nowhere to live. The Fund is very important as it gives us\nthe possibility to offer immediate help to those most in need. For example:\nDhan Bhadur, the father of one of our students, who is having dialysis in a\nKathmandu hospital needed help with travel expenses; Ishwori has just arrived\nin Kathmandu with her disabled daughter and needed support for very basic\nliving expenses\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Orphanages<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year we were able to give small donations to the\nHope Foundation and Jorpati Orphanage. Hope Foundation is a small group home\nfor 14 street children and Jorpati Orphanage is home to 26 children (between\nthe ages of 4-16).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

HELP TO MONASTERIES<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sed Gyued Monastery<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The monastery which is presently home\nto 59 young monks (under the age of 16) faces many difficulties as they rely\nentirely on donations for the running and upkeep of the monastery. Many of the\nyoung monks arrive in the monastery because their families are unable to look\nafter them and so entrust their children to be fed, educated and cared for\nwithin the monastic structure. The increasing number of young monks puts a great\nstrain on the available financial resources. Since years the Association has\nbeen supporting this monastery and, as well as finding sponsors to support the\nyoung monks, is currently financing teachers and an assistant (to help with the\ngeneral care of the youngest monks and cleaning). We also supply the monastery\nevery year with stationary supplies to ensure that they have the best possible\nconditions to study. This year the children living in the monastery have also\nbeen provided with new mattresses, sheets and winter blankets! The new dining\nhall is also finally ready and furnished which means the monks will have space\nto sit and eat indoors during the cold and monsoon weather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NEW PROJECT 2018-19<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

WATER PROJECT<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The purpose of the project is the Sustainable\nDevelopment Goal (SDG) n. 6 „Ensuring water and sanitary conditions for\neveryone in view of a sustainable world\u201d through the implementation of a\ncollection, accumulation and revitalisation system of water resources from a\nsource to the village of Chapakhori in the Bagmati region, south-east of\nKathmandu. Currently the population of the Village lives without immediate\navailability of water resources necessary for human consumption (drinking\nwater, supply for schools, etc.), sanitary, hygiene and animal needs. The\nsupply of water in the area suffered a further impoverishment due to the\nearthquake of 2015. Currently 400 families live in the village (about 2000\npeople); the houses do not have direct water connection and the supply points\nin the village (fountains) are dry. Every day, sometimes several times a day,\nthe people of the <\/em><\/strong>village <\/em><\/strong>have to walk a long way downstream, along a steep\nvalley incision, to be able to reach water.<\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A first site inspection was carried out by Italian\nengineer Matteo Greggio in February this year with a further geological\ninspection in May by Claudio Galli. A detailed project, in two phases, on how\nwater could be accessed, channelled and stored in the village for both domestic\nand farming use has been drawn-up. A further field trip in November was made,\ntogether with staff from a Nepalese drilling company, to ensure that the\nspecialised machines necessary to do the work could be transported and used at\nthe site. Other technical details were also clarified. During this visit the\nlocal people – who are extremely happy – offered flower garlands to the\nvolunteers of Help in Action! It is planned that the project will begin in\nApril 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
